Janel studied acting technique and scene study at T. Schreiber Studio, Meisner technique at William Esper Studio, Improvisation at the Peoples Improv Theater in New York City, scene study with award-winning producer Deborah Kampmeier, and on-camera technique at Mel Mack Studio. She performed stand-up at Gotham Comedy Club and The Stand.

Janel was a Championship Irish Dancer, dominated the rink on her roller derby team in Pittsburgh, and plays classical clarinet. Janel studies painting and works with acrylics, painting landscapes and portraits. She also excels with charcoal and pastels, drawing portraits and still life. In her spare time, she writes love letters to friends and family on her grandfather's typewriter, Henry.

Teaching English to foreign nationals, she supports the charity RestoreNYC, which aims to end human trafficking in New York City. She also supports Nomi Network and Elegantees, two nonprofits that provide jobs for women at risk and survivors of human trafficking, through economic empowerment programs.
